TGIF: 7/6/12 Edition

This Week's Question:
Comfort Reads: Which books do you go to for comfort & familiarity? Is there a type of book you seek out when you're needing that extra bit of comfort in your life?

The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen
is most definitely the first book that comes to mind. It's my all-time favorite YA, and there's a reason I've read it 13 times and counting. If I'm in the mood for comfort, there's an extremely good chance I'm going to re-read, if only because I know I love the book and that it'll suit my mood. Series picks are Harry Potter or the Love Comes Softly books. I also really like reading romances that are happier, with a little less angst than I usually prefer, but still plenty of emotion. I often go for contemporary romance. Kristan Higgins writes a great comfort read, as does Meg Cabot. Because I trust them, I tend to default to favorite authors, especially if I'm taking a chance on a book I haven't read. Authors like Julia Quinn, Lisa Kleypas, Eloisa James, Jill Shalvis, and Sarah Mayberry have a great chance of being picked up when I'm in the need for comfort. I've only recently discovered her, but I feel like Shannon Stacey would be a fantastic comfort read pick, too.

  1. I LOVED The Truth about Forever. It was my first Dessen book, and it got me hooked completely on her writing. And as for Harry Potter and Julia Quinn and Lisa Kleypas, I'm in total agreement - brilliant stuff!

  2. I absolutely adore TTAF!  I believe it was my first by her, too, although I'm not positive.  My library at that point was tiny, but they had TTAF and This Lullaby, and I read them both super close together one summer.  I don't remember for sure which one was first.

Those are some great authors!  Love!

  3. YESSS! The Truth About Forever is one of my favourite books. So so good. Harry Potter is definitely a comfort book too, been meaning to re-read that for the umpteenth time. :)

  4. IT'S SO WONDERFUL. ♥ I've been meaning to re-read Harry Potter (third time for me...I didn't read them until the end of my freshman year of college), too, but there are just so many things I want to read right now, I haven't gotten around to it.  That's where fanfic comes in handy, though, LOL.  Enjoyable HP and romance fix, and it doesn't take as long as a book.

  5. I have all of Kristan Higgins' books & any of them would be a good book to re-read. I also agree with you about Jill Shalvis, Lisa Kleypas, Eloisa James & Julia Quinn. How about Carly Phillips, Susan Mallery or Robyn Carr? I have re-read a lot of these books. I got as far as the 4th Harry Potter book & they started getting dark. Also, too long!

  6. Yes!  Kristan Higgins is wonderful.  Just One of the Guys is my favorite of hers, but I would absolutely reread any of the ones I've read.  Which is all but two of them.

You know, I've never actually read a book by any of the three you mentioned!  I've been meaning to read a Carly Phillips book for months, but I've never actually gotten around to it.  I once started one of Carr's Virgin River books, but I wasn't really in the mood for it so I didn't finish it. Susan Mallery has recently popped up on my radar with her Fool's Gold books, so I'll have to check her out soon.

The HP books do get longer and darker, but they're totally worth it.  I devoured the entire series in two weeks the first time I read it, haha.

  9. Oh, and Kieran Kramer's series of historical romances, Impossible Bachelors, is excellent & all are worth re-reading also. You are right about Just One of the Guys. That & The Next Best Thing are my 2 favorites of Kristan's.

Psst! I now reside over at The Book Barbies. I'd still love to hear your thoughts, though!
